2007 silverado with low oil pressure and engine noise at low speeds

Asked by scraft Jan 17, 2015 at 01:36 AM about the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Extended Cab SB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 silverado vortec max with 180,00 miles.  my oil pressure is reading low.
when first started and cold pressure reads about 35, but once warmed up drops down
to 15-20.  seems to run fine at highway speeds, but upon deacceleration at about 10-
15 mph, a grinding type sound appears and seems to be coming from the engine
somewhere.  Just recently replaced oil pressure sending unit, but not fix oil pressure
reading. check engine light is on and active fuel management system is not working
either (only when first taking off, but once warmed-up stays in v8 mode).

yes at idle 15 would be ok, but thinking it probably shouldn't drop back down to 15 to 20 after warmed up and driving down the road. It only stays up at 30-35 on initial take-off for a few miles and then drops back down.

When warm the oil pressure is usually lower than cold. It's all about rpm as the oil pump is driven by the engine pressure will rise and fall with rpm. As long as it doesn't drop below 5 psi at idle and stays above 15 or so while driving it will be fine

ad a thicker oil, go to 10/30 if that raises and keeps pressure up then you need to replace oil pump. using a thicker oil just fills the gap and keeps a higher pressure. the noise i would have to hear, could be main bearings? or just a belt idler tension-er? i changed my oil pump at 130,000 its easy, they are behind timming cover
