Looking at a BMW x3 3.0i with 173,000 miles for 3800? Is it a good deal? Will it be an okay first car?

Asked by May 13, 2017 at 03:36 PM about the 2005 BMW X3 3.0i AWD

Question type: General

I test drove it and It drove fine, now this will be my first car. How fast do I
expect to have problems with it, I know it has 173,000 miles but seemed
very well maintained. I think it was well maintained because of how nice the
interior is but anything can be detailed. When driving it, it drove in a straight
line like it was supposed to and the only noise while driving was mufflers
possibly that's what my father said. I will post pictures of it. I noticed this car
was on the market a while ago for 5k and just wasn't selling so I feel I might
be getting my money's worth. Please help me out and give me all the
advice you can thank you

The car would be fine as a first car, but only for someone who has a couple extra grand set aside for future repairs. A muffler alone is $700. Older BMW's are nice, but cost a lot to maintain, especially ones that has 173K miles on it. It's almost due for a rebuilt transmission at that mileage which can be $3000. Here is a site I use for parts, so you can compare....www.fcpuero.com. For a first car, I would stick with a Toyota, Honda or Ford sedan.
