Car overheats slowly unless the heats on, still have hot air too

Recently just purchased a 2003 g35 and right off
the bat it started slowly overheating. I found out if
the heats on almost full blast it's enough to keep
the engine operable but I can't keep doing that
forever. Still has full coolant oil doesn't look milky
and the heats still hot as hell. Just won't stay
cooled by itself for very long. Especially highways
speeds I can just watch the temp gage slowly
creep up. It's not as bad at idle or town speeds but  
will still slowly get to the H. Any advise pplz?

take a short ride don't turn the heat on , open the hood , see if the fans are on , the temp. gauge works ? you should reach a normal operating temp. if the gauge keeps climbing and the fans don't turn on then the coolant sensor or something else if bad .that,s pretty much what a mechanic would do .
