Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2004 Ford Explorer is making a  clacking
sound. I drive approximately 240 miles daily, One
morning I checked my oil and added the needed
amount and left the oil cap off. 3 days later I
cranked up and the clacking began, once I popped
the hood the oil cap was right where I left it. I then
added a half QT oil, drove about 4 miles and the
clacking stop for the rest of that day. Well its back
now :(  My fluid levels are good, any suggestions?
??

4.0 SOHC engine has chain guides, one in front and one in rear. The clacking sound could mean a bad chain guide (they wear). Check the net for "tensioners" related to your year and engine model.
