Towing

Asked by GuruCJCD7 Mar 14, 2019 at 07:04 PM about the 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer 4x4 Eddie Baurer with 6 cyl 4.0 and 3.55 ratio
can I change the ratio to 3.73 with the appropriate towing hitch, trans cooler etc
to be able to better pull a 4000 lb camping trailer?

You would have to change the front and rear gear sets in a 4x4. As it is set up now the tow rating is 3,400 pounds.

Thanks that’s pretty much what my owners manual was recommending however another site like this one from a supposed ford technician said that if I added the towing equipment that I mentioned earlier, then I could safely go 5000 pounds with the current ratio How much more weight do you think I could safely toe if I do increase to 3.73? It’s approximately $1400 per axle
