Where is air flow door located on ac/heater on 2005 for exploreer

Asked by Shawn Nov 06, 2013 at 08:25 AM about the 2005 Ford Explorer XLT Sport V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my air will not switch from dash to floor or defrost.  I hear clicking when i turn switch.  switch appears to be working cause it will turn off and ac on.  I am thinking the accuator or link on door may be bad but i don't know where they are located at.

The accuator is probably shot, as it was on my 2003. It's buried back beneath the dash, which has to be removed to be replaced on the 2003. There are videos on the net showing it's location and replacement. There is also a work around involving a long wire-tie and a small hole drilled in the dash. Dealership wanted about 700 bucks to repair the accuator on a 2003 explorer. The part is only about fifty bucks.

the temperature blend door actuator is what I think OJ is referring to. which the dash does need to taken out to be replaced and that one is electric. the others run off vacuum and they are all separate, there is one for floor, panel, defrost and air inlet. you most likely have a vacuum leak causing them not to work since it would be very unlikely all would stop working at one time. you need to track down the vacuum lines and check for leaks. Or take it to someone who is familiar with something like this.

The clicking sound you hear is usually caused by a plastic cog on the actuator being broken. When a cog (gear) on the unit breakes, the teeth do not engage properly and the result is the clicking noise.
