1966 Mustang with original brakes

Asked by Jul 26, 2017 at 11:17 AM about the 1966 Ford Mustang Base Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased my 1966 Mustang in June of that year.  It has a little over 100K
miles, but has a low mile short block.  It has been restored to street quality,
not showroom quality.  I enjoyed driving it until I took it out one day and the
brake action sent me immediately to the right, almost uncontrolably. (Could
have been to the left - it has been a long time ago.) My question is the
brakes.  A few years ago I read in a magazine about brakes in that area of
time that were defective.  The last time I drove the car was 7 years ago - it
has been in storage.  We are thinking of having it repaired, and my husband
insists it just needs to have the line bled, there is air in the system.
Can you give me ANY information on this?  I believe I read it in the Mustang
Monthly magazine a month or so after they were here for our Mustang
gathering in the late '80's.  Our car was one of the ones featured in the
magazine.  However, I cannot find my copy of that magazine anywhere.
Thank you for your attention.

100K miles I doubt it still has original brakes, back then cars brakes only lasted from 12000 to 20000 miles if you used then very lightly, a number of things can cause brakes to grab, contaminated brake linings, wheel cylinders, auto adjusters not operating properly, failing brake hoses, etc. You really need to open them up and inspect for wear and any damaged or inoperative parts, they don't last forever and even though it sits {and that can be worse than driving it everyday} they can go bad, just the moisture in the air can cause corrosion and or rust problems.

If it has been in storage for 7 years, I would have the brake lines bleed, and all other fluids, such as fuel, coolant, and oil drained and swapped out. Have the lines inspected for cracks and leaks and a through going over by your mechanic before taking it out on the road. Remember it's a 51 year old car, so plenty of issues can crop up from sitting for long periods of times. Cars like to be driven.
