What does it mean when the "brake" and battery warning lights go on and off randomly and simultaneously?

Asked by sbgiammarco Sep 17, 2012 at 06:19 PM about the 2007 Nissan Versa S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday, the red warning lights that say "brake" and the one that looks like a battery began flashing.  They did not flash steadily, and would randomly go on and off, sometimes staying on for 3-5 minutes and then stay off for awhile.  There was no particular pattern to the lights going on and off, but they always went on and off simultaneously.  I took the car to Auto Zone and the guy said it was not the battery charging belt or low brake fluid.  He told me it may be an electrical problem.  Any ideas?

I would suspect a loose electrical connection or a bad ground connection.

Brake light could also mean the brake fluid is just low enough to trip the sensor every now and then upon braking/ accelerating/ turning and could possily indicate worn brake pads as it takes more fluid in the lines to compress the brakes during braking. I would have someone or yourself inspect the brake pads. The battry could be a loose wire at the alternator or loose battery terminal as well causing non-regulated charging of the battery from the alternator while charging.
