AWD is always engaged, hence AWD, just like FWD. If your vehicle was a 4WD that would mean you have a choice of 2WD or 4WD.

Let's clarify. There was the base 2wd manual or auto There was the XR 2wd manual or auto There was the XR 4WD which only available in auto The XRS to the best of my recall was only available in manual initially. The 4WD as noted is a 2 WD car until wheel slippage is detected and then the transfer takes place. My experience with one of the very first 4WD was the OEM tires sucked badly in the snow and I found I had to induce wheel spin to get the backs to come in and the car would then corner better. When I changed to Michelin Harmony tires I had a little tank in my hands.

To keep it simple for the non-gearheaded, as a rule, if a car or SUV is marketed as "ALL WHEEL DRIVE" or AWD, it is either always in 4WD with no way to put it in 2WD, or it switches from 2WD to 4WD automatically as needed. When they call it "four wheel drive," you have to switch between 2WD and 4WD manually. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but if you think of AWD as being an automatic 4WD system without levers, buttons, or switches to operate, you've got the jist of it. (Therefore, 4WD operation is "automatic" on the AWD Matrix.)

The models of matrix Base came auto fwd rate awd XR came auto awd,fwd and in 5sp The xrs came in auto and the rare fwd 6spd ,the xrs never came awd In order to eliminate a awd is to change the transmission to a fwd transmission and swap the rear to a dead axle beam all this is directly bolted up nothing major other than transmission and depending on weather your doing it as a auto or a manual will have more more with clutch set up and hydro change
