Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So today I notice that while in idle my G6
while drop to about 500 RPMs then crank
up to 1000, then back to 500 over and over
again. Then on the way home I pulled into
the turning lane to exit the highway and it
completely shut off with only using
moderate break. It doesn't have problems
getting up to speed and the electrical
systems seem to be working just fine. Any
ideas?

Try some maintenance things first. Clean throttle body and clean or replace idle air control valve or mass air flow sensor depending on which one of these you have replace fuel filter if have not done so in a while add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank and use middle grade or high test gas to help clean out the gum and carbon build.

To me, it sounds like a vacuum leak. Quite possibly the vacuum hose to the brake master cylinder has become dislodged or broken. Other possibilities are a faulty MASS Airflow Sensor or PCV valve.

Well today I was going down the highway and it completely shut down and now it's not starting at all.

I got it running again but when I accelerate it just stays in 1st gear and doesn't shift up.
