Upgrading to a new set of tires and possibly new rims. 2007 Mitsubishi Pajero mini

Asked by tbannin Apr 26, 2016 at 06:36 AM about the 2007 Mitsubishi Raider LS 4WD V6

Question type: Car Customization

2007 Mitsubishi Pajero Mini 4wd, small engine. Current rims are 5.5x15,
positive 46 offset with 175/80R15 tires. I'd like to get BF Goodrich All terrain
tires. On the smaller end is the 215/75R15 tires that supposedly fit on 5.5
inch rims, I am wondering if I should get new rims (if so, what size?) or
keep the old ones to keep expenses down and how this change would
effect performance or if there would be too much stress on anything
systematically?

If you keep the overall tire diameter the same your fine.. go as wide as the 5.5 rim will accept ~~ check at the Tire Center. Going to a plus 1" rim gains the ability of using the widest possible tire on your vehicle that will fit without having clearance issues, Let a tire center fit and check this before you spend! but once again the overall diameter of the tire MUST be the same. Vehicles that have large rim diameters change and ruin the engineering design of the suspension geometry, and cause BAD handling, BAD ride, BAD stopping, and finally cause speedometer error.

Thanks, I found a Tire size calculator site and it tells me based on my initial desires, that the overall diameter size goes up about 1.6 inches. Based on what you said this is a big NO NO, or is there any amount of increase or decrease that will have a negligible effect?

Once again, A Plus Sizing rule of thumb is to increase tire width by 10 millimeters and decrease sidewall height by 5 to 10 percent for each 1-inch increase in wheel diameter.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You will often find only +/- a few TENTHS of an inch difference in the overall diameter of the tires. This results in a negligible +/- four tenths of a mph speedometer variance.
