Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just recently my car started making a loud humming noise that seems to be coming
from the drivers side under the hood.  I check the belt pulleys, they are not wobbling,
Oil is OK, Car does not get hotter than normal.  This happens in idle, park & drive.  My
car has 128,000 miles, but I never went more than 4500 miles between oil changes,
had timing belt replaced along with tension belts.  Brakes are needing replacement
soon. My car was in good shape until this.  What could be causing this loud humming
noise???

How are the suspension components? Is anything rubbing? Are your tires out of balance?

Sounds like the idler pulley or tensioner pulley bearing are going bad can not tell by looking at them or even pulling on them the belt has to be removed to take tension on the pulley then can be checked by spinning the pulley to see and hear if bearing are bad.

Thanks Mark, but why would the sound seem to come from opposite side of the engine area? I just had the drive belts put on about 3 months ago.

Not Mark but when bearings go bad in pulleys the sound travels that is why belt has to be removed to found bad pulley bearing.
