What is causing engine vibration/lugging?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine/auto trans combination perform as expected in all speed ranges and gears except for speeds between about 50-60mph in D. It gets worse when going up a shallow hill. In this speed range the engine is turning over at 1400-2000 rpm. The vibration can be relieved somewhat by moving into 3 rd gear. It is sensed through the throttel pedal as well as by sound. I have run it with premium gas and put the KD44 thrugh the gas system but with no change. Problem may be worse in heat ald less in cooler environment, but not by much. The dealer's mechanic said that the vehicle is running as designed, but I can't believe that Toyota would put something like this on the road.

Is this normal?
Can this be repaired?

TIA

Contact your regional Toyota service rep. If your dealer won't help with this, call the number that should be in your owner's manual for Toyota customer service.

Interesting??? I don't feel any vibration like you say. 40-50 is when my truck runs the smoothest. I would definitely keep bugging toyota about this. These trucks could use more power though.

The tranny probably shifts too soon, especially when hitting inclines, and doesn't kick into higer revs when it should, that's when I did notice vibration from the engine. I think it's definitely a lack of power too. I've added a performance air filter and have removed the charcoal filter from my truck and I get smoother shifting when accelerating. I also find that I don't struggle on small hills or when hitting a steep incline on a highway. Check out, tacomaworld.com and ask around, there's some good advice on that site.

I had a vibration problem. The dealer repaired the problem after I had the head mechanic take a drive in it. He noticed the problem right away. After the drive the head mechanic trouble shot the problem by swapping out parts and isolated it to the drive shaft which was apparently out of balance. They quickly corrected the problem under the warranty once it was positively identified. Later, I learned that there was a recall on the drive shafts, but my Taco is four cyl with rear wheel drive, so this may not apply to you. Otherwise, I have had no problems since then, however I did recently add a 2000 pound set of leaf springs - one on each side - that IMHO greatly improved the ride for me.
