Asked by Samantha Jan 27, 2015 at 07:16 PM about the 2007 Kia Sportage LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have check the entire engine
compartment for leaks  and nothing..? No
oil dripping everything is nice and dry.
However every time we check our oil it's
dry. So we put oil in and it shows on the dip
stick at the right levels we will drive around
no smoke coming out the exhaust. And a
bout 2 weeks later there is barely any oil on
the dip stick. It doesn't run any different no
ticking no knocking but it's confusing the
hell out of us... any ideas?

How many miles on your Sportage?

If no oil is leaking there is only one place it can be going and that is out the exhaust. Likely causes are bad valve seals, worn valve guides or worn piston rings. To diagnose I would have a compression test and cylinder leak down test done at a local mechanic shop.

But where would the smoke be? I mean if we're burning that much oil it would smoke or there would be so sort of oil residue in the exhaust right?

Not always, much of the oil will be burned off at the catalytic converter. Sometimes they don't smoke much or at all and still use oil. Oil either leaks or goes out the tail pipe.

You could pull the sparkplugs and look at them, I'll be they are oily and wet.

Hello my dears, I just want to say that it is absolutely normal to have engine oil consumption. If you revise your vehicle catalogue you will see the averge oil consumtion per miles. I have always for my toyota corolla to add one liter per 1000 mile.

Hi all, Just wanted to share some of my personal experience. I have a KIA Sportage 2014, bought it brand new, all service always done properly. No issues whatsoever until last year. Same thing happened, oil was missing, no leaks. After a while they missing oil started showing up in the exhaust, oil pressure light was ON intermittently and the engine was stalling. This is when everything went downhill. Took it to the KIA dealership and they say that not all of the services were done with them so they could not make a warranty valid. I take it to external service and we find out the the spark plugs are ALL filled with oil. long story short, I tried everything, even a new motor but after a month working ok, it happens again. I have found information about this type of failure in the link at the bottom of the post but as of now im still not sure how to proceed. This car has been in the shop for almost a year, I have spent a significant amount on money on repairs and still I get back to the same problem. If anyone has any input or suggestion or how to make KIA take ownership of this quality issue please let me know https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/337085-kia-class-action- lawsuit-targets-engine-oil-defect/

For the person that said oil consumption is normal - ie. i litre per 1000 miles on a Corolla. I have to say there is something wrong with your car. My cars don't use oil. 2001 Civic (275000km), 2008 Mazda 5 (170000), 2004 Ram Hemi (180,000km), etc.. I don't add oil between changes. I bought a used 86 Camry with 333,300 km, and it only used a small amount between changes) I'm conflicted with Kia. Some people seem to have good luck, while for others, it's a disaster. People always go on about the warranty. A good car hopefully won't need many claims or any. If a car company doesn't stand behind it, it doesn't matter how many years its for.

I am now seeing my 2017 Sportage use 1/2 qt in 1200 miles, I've emailed Kia Corp. today for the reason for this. I have read that many manufacturers are now using low tension piston rings to adhere to our corrupt government Cafe' standards. I may be going for an older Rav4 or CX5 if it gets worse and Kia doesn't honor the warranty on 2.4s. I've been getting oil changes free from Kia as part of their sales pitch.

Kia is being sued over this. It is a bad engine design. My dads sportage also burns a lot of oil.
