Asked by zookster926 Mar 18, 2017 at 09:26 AM about the 2003 Acura TL 3.2 Type-S FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the Alternator and the Battery and it drove home fine but I just drove it again and it broke down and will not start. Jumped it and it stayed running long enough to get it off the road but than died again.

The battery may be old and have a short, or the charging system is still not working. Could be the main wire to the alternator, it should have a fuse-able link that may be burnt out, or the alternator still does not work. Also check out the fuses for the charging system.

Thanks, the battery is brand new we replaced it at the same time as the Alternator. Is the fuse you are talking about the IG1 - MAIN 60A ?

Its part of the big wire that bolts onto the alternator. If you have a digital multi meter you can test the wire for continuity. Also use it to check at the battery when the car is running to see what kind of voltage the alternator is putting out. It should check around 14 to 14.7 DCV.

If anyone else encounters this it happened with my son's car. Replaced the alternator, ignition switch (as some suggested) checked continuity, grounds, etc.. Turned out to be a broken wire in the harness that plugs into the alternator. Black and yellow one. Drove me crazy but it's fixed beautifully now!
