HELP- 2003 discovery II (got took?)

Asked by tntbecca Jan 14, 2013 at 04:47 PM about the 2002 Land Rover Discovery Series II 4 Dr SE AWD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Got it checked out - bought it. DROve it a 150mi. home. ALL was good. Very next day it sounds like someone put a knife in a garbage disposial. WHat on earth could it be. No warning lites on and I got it home fine. But don't know if I even dare try to drive it anywhere to repair.

Is it a internal engine noise? Could it be one of the belt driven accessories?

It sounds like its coming from the back of the engine. By looking under hood could not see anything.

Could possibly be a broken or cracked flex plate. It is a plate bolted to the back of the engine that the transmission torque convertor is bolted to. If they are cracked or broken, the noise it makes is similar to what you have described. I would recommend having it towed to a repair shop that knows Land Rovers...

If it's a ticking sound and your coolant level is low, you may have a coolant leak causing localized over heating of the lifters and a loss of hydrolic pressure in that lifter... it could also be simply a bad lifter. Try some Lucas Oil additive with a fresh oil change and see if it quiets down. If your coolant level is low, top off and look for leaks. The DII is notorious for radiator and gasket leaks..
