Car starts but will not stay running,

Asked by nevadarover Aug 24, 2015 at 09:52 AM about the 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Veh was over heating.   I changed the defective water pump &put in new timing belt.  The
car was running just fine.  Now it starts but will not stay running.  I can run the RPM's up
to 3 grand and it will hunt from 2500-3000 RPM and sustain this for for 2 min. plus.
Timing marks are all aligned. Air Box hoses are all connected, I can not find any
unconnected wires. I also changed out the sparking plugs while doing all of this.

If it was running properly before making the repairs (except for the overheating issue) it has to something you have done. Make sure timing belt is properly installed, go over all electrical connections you may have come into contact with, make sure you didn't get sparkplug wires on the wrong sparkplug (if this applies to your vehicle) and make sure air box connections aren't leaking.
