Looking at new head gaskets for a '97 Subaru legacy outback 2.5 DOHC. Is it recommended to pull the engine or do the r&r on the heads in the car? Got the shop & tools to do either.

Excellent question. I've not done a HG repair on these yet but here is one of my favorite threads to keep on hand: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f66/how-replace-ej25-head-gaskets-without-removing-engine-57335/ I know it is a forester forum, but he does it on the outback dohc first. He does it without pulling and then with pulling much later in the thread. HTH
