car makes noise when trying to keep a constant speed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

No noise if I'm stopped. No noise when I start moving(nothing I can notice),
Once I'm in motion, then I try to keep the pace steady, that's when it makes a
metal on metal noise. Almost like it's a differential. As if it's the point of contact
when the power gets transferred to the rear wheels. Changed rotos and pads
so it's not those.

Thanks TrannyMan, I have not tried that. I wasn't sure if I should try to spin it on the jacks. Is it safe enough to do that? wouldn't that screw up the gears? Also I think it's 6 speed. If I let the gas pedal go, then there will be no noise. Now when I press again while the car is moving... and as soon as it starts to engage the power back to the wheeels, I hear the noise. I press hard enough on the gas,,the noise is gone again. It's coming from the back and it's a rear wheel drive.

Oh ok thanks. I will try it out tomorrow. It has 180000 Kms So if it is differential, you're saying that it will be too hard to fix? Not worth opening it in my own garage then lol? that's what I was hoping. I'm a wanna be a diy mechanic. Was pretty proud with my first brake job this weekend

Oh thanks so much Man. Really appreciate all the help. If I keep driving it like this for a while till summer is that a big no no you think or it might be ok if it is the things we are guestimating

My guess would be either drive shaft related such as carrier bearing, transmission yoke or universal joints or as discussed the differential. If it were mine I would start by draining and refilling the differential paying close attention to what the fluid looks like.
