Question type: General

I just purchased a toy hauler (3500lbs) and a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71 - 5.3 liter - 2h/4h/4l drive option and a tow package switch in the end of the gear shift. I went for a practice run around neighborhood and it seemed to pull trailer just fine in 2High without having the tow package initiated. I did try engaging tow package and it really seemed to be an extremely low gearing and would be hesitant to use on the highway. I will be towing trailer from Houston, Texas to Cragford, Alabama next month and am looking for correct settings for truck to pull trailer - Example: initiate the tow package button Yes or No / use 2High or 4High on freeway / use 4low when on dirt roads at destination.I will be using setup to transport Gold Prospecting Equipment to a creek/river bed. I do have electronic brake setup and equalizer sway bar.

I can't answer all of those, but for sure do not use 4High on freeway

Tow/Haul mode all it does is change gear ratios.. Download that link and see Chapter 4 Page 68. You don't need 4 wheel drive High or Low either just because you are on a dirt road, A soft, gravel, sand road yes. Also snow, mud, etc. is what it's for. Basics: Don't allow the engine to lug or "gear hunt"..shifting back and forth on it's own. Use the tow mode or just drop a gear and let your engine work at about 60-70% of red-line.
