if its not hot outside maybe, however watch your temp gauge. Running while engine is hot is just asking for trouble. Spend the few hundered bucks to get it fixed vs needing to replace a $3000 engine.

The problem is NOT just being hot outside.... rather stuck in bumper to bumper traffic... I suppose if you are constantly moving and it's not over 70 degrees... you mentioned that you didn't need air conditioning.. then you could drive for a while ... I agree though with the person who posted last, you're taking an unnecessary risk.. don't be penny wise and pound foolish....get your car fixed...

A lot of new cars have a thermostat that turns on the fan when you need it...so, if you're driving forward and air is circulating over the engine .. the fan on a newer car might not actually turn on at all... BUT, especially with an almost 18 year old vehicle... Not a good idea.
