i have a 1991 chevy camaro rs 3.1L and i was driving home and my stereo wouldnt turn on and the rpm meter was acting weird so i turned the car off waited and turned it back on and nothing happened. a few mins later i tried again and the car just ticked and wouldnt start. then i tried again turned the car on turned on the radio and it worked until i turned on the headlights and it shut my radio off and when i tried to start the car nothing happened. now everytime i try to start the car it just ticks idk whats going on any suggestions?

Your alternator needs to be replaced.

I have seen it twice, both times on a 95 f-body, the alterntor receives a reference voltage from the battery to the alternator, both cars lost the signal, the wire had broken somewhere , had to trace the wire back and splice a new one in. It's a single wire running to the back of the alternator usually a plastic clip on type connector , not the one with the nut, turn the key on and check for voltage at the wire. I know your car is s generation older but the wire may run in a similar path.it goes from the passenger shock tower down through a loom and back up to the alternator, 18 inches from where it started......
