Battery drained

Asked by Jones660 Sep 23, 2016 at 09:17 PM about the 1990 Chevrolet C/K 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

With a brand new battery and alternator, my battery will
slowly drain down until I have to jump it to start it. Twice
now I've replaced both batt and alt which lasts for a month
or 2 then slowly i can tell the battery is losing its charge. My
biggest problem is that it's not just drained and that's it.
Every time the truck sits for an extended period of time,
such as overnight, the battery seems fully charged and
starts just fine but if I drive to the gas station and shut it off
then the restart seems to lag until one day it has drained
the battery too much and then I need a jump.

What about the Battery terminals & terminal wires, and ground to frame from battery and block to frame ground? May also have a voltage leak due to a wire shorting out, or a bad connections somewhere. Connection at starter check it, Starter May be showing early signs of failure and showing this when its hot.

I have the same problem, and when I use my turn signals. My volts needle bounces up and down with the sign as l lights. When use my lights, it drops 1 volt, same with the use of the power windows. If i turn on my a/c set to high, it drops 2 or 3 volts.

I have the exact same issue. New alternator, new battery, new cables. When idling, the turn signals almost drop the voltage to the lowest on the meter.

I think I have found and fixed this issue. On my '91 k1500 there is a distribution block on the passenger side firewall. The terminals on this block was corroded. This is where the alternator cable runs and connects to the feed wire to the battery. I cleaned them all with a wire brush, coated them with conductive electrical grease and, so far, the battery has been working fine. It had been so bad that ?I could charge the battery, start the truck and let it idle for 10 minutes and the truck would not start again unless I charged the battery again. So the battery was able to start the engine, but the alternator could not charge the battery back up because because of resistance in the corrosion.
