Is the oil pressure sending unit, in a 1990 Chevy k1500 350, (GAS) engine just a sensor, or is it a switch, as well?

Asked by Oct 08, 2017 at 02:00 PM about the 1990 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Standard Cab SB 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1990 Chevy k1500 truck,  with a 5.7 litter,
(350ci) gasoline engine. My question is the oil
pressure sending unit just a variable resistor that
yields to an actual oil pressure gauge, or is it an
actual switch that closes to make a circuit for a
light.  If not, then,  are these types of
(sensor/switch) combos available for purchase?
The ECM will not be a factor,  it is being completely
bypassed.
Thanks
