I have a friend with a 1992 C1500 4.3L with A/T. It threw a rod and he was going to scrap it but the yard only offered him $200 for it. He decided to keep it an either part it out or try and find a used engine for real cheap, as he has little money to spend on it. Does anyone know what 4.3L engines will drop in without any modifications? Do they have to be from that model or year truck? Thanks.

There will be tons of these motors at just about any scrap yard out there. If he sticks with the 4.3 he should not have any problems with modifications (they do after all make upgrade kits for swapping out 4.3s to 5.7s and 7.4s.) As far as fit/motor mounts any 88-95 GM truck engine will work, unless you try to swap in a vortec engine which would require modifications.

Any 4.3 made before 96 will go right in

Thanks for the answers. I should have also asked about the ECU, does it have to be replaced with the engine, or do all model/years work with the same one? That doesn't seem very likely for the older ones especially.
