Help! Ignition rotor doesn't match when timing mark on vibration damper is on zero.o

Asked by Javier Mar 29, 2017 at 09:42 AM about the 1993 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was adjusting the valves for this C1500, 4.3L V6 due to a noice, but notice
the rotor is 30 degree ahead of #1 spark plug wire terminal if damper line is
align with timing mark (0) in front the engine . Can anyone advise on any
document to check the whole ignition system and valve adjustment ? I follow a
procedure of removing the spark plug for piston #1 to check the TDC, but the
noise is higher now. Any advise will be appreciated . Thanks

Ok here, what is "noise is higher now"? Either someone timed the engine without disconnecting the timing advance.. the distributor gear pin is sheared, or the timing chain has jumped. The distributor cap have vertical towers?

I was told the initial noise was probably a lifter. That some adjustment to the valve will be enough. I follow Haynes repair manual for that adjustment but notice the rotor disalignment. I try the best TDC i could. closed the head and started again and the noise get higher.

Lifter noise, did you adjust the rocker arms with the engine turned off?

Until no back lash then 1/4 turn? while each cylinder is up to their TDC's? rotating the engine to the proper degree's?

That is fine, the amount of turn on the nut is a preference by who is doing it. Some people go up to 1 turn. I don't like going that far myself, I'll do either 1/4 turn or 1/2 turn. And yes, this is what I was talking about. But you need to start with #1 up on the compression stroke before starting to do this.

Number 1 needs to be coming up on the compression stroke when bringing it up to TDC or you would be 180° out on the camshaft.

If #1 did not come up on the compression stroke.

im about to start tightening now and I wonder if there any difference to loose all the nuts before to start or at the time i got to that point ?

Do one at a time, then you kinda know how far you were off. You going to be turning it over by hand to get the next set of valves? I would...

Rowefast, The truck doesn't start. I wonder what could be wrong? Maybe to tight? I even when only have turn after eliminate all play!! its not that difficult to do that adjustment. The only thing I can think of its when trying to get the O at the vibration damper, it passed an inch or so I cranked back a littler bit to align. Any Idea? Thanks

Ok, check the distributor timing by bringing #1 up to TDC on the compression stroke, the rotor should point to #1 spark plug tower. Make sure you have spark also.

Ok Rowefast. What happened was that when cranking the engine I confused with the other mark on the damper, so It never was well calibrated. Now I could started it and looks fine, almost no noise(no covers). I have to run it closed and see, but I assume that if any noise comeback I can adjust only the loose one instead of all them as I was doing. Thank you so very much for your time! It was a great value for me!

Sorry on that one, I didn't even consider another timing mark. I should have told you to put a long skinny screwdriver in the spark plug hole so to check for the piston. So good to hear you got it going!
