1996 4.3L Chevy C1500 Cheyenne. What should I know about replacing catalytic converter?

My truck has lost acceleration and I have come to the conclusion the
catalytic converter has failed.   

I am considering getting a direct fit cat.  Does this mean it’s just a matter of
unbolting the old cat and replacing with new one?  I imagine the removal of
the 20 year old bolts will be an issue.   

Reading through a couple of posts here, I am also considering having a
local muffler shop weld in a new cat. Would it be preferable to go this
route?

Well I hope you have a set of torches. If you try to remove th bolts with out heating them up red hot they will most likely brake. I think the y-pipe is also the converter assembly. You do not want to brake the bolts at the exhaust manifold. That will be a big can of worms then. If you do not have exhaust experience. I would highly recommend that you take it to an exhaust shop and have it done. I will be cheaper in the long run if you brake bolts

Thank you. I am leaning to having a muffler shop do the work. Are there any pros/cons to having them cut out and weld a cat vs getting a direct fit cat?

That repair is mostly more affordable. If the shop uses a Quality part you should be OK

Speaking of parts, where can i get ratings on cats. Additionally which online auto parts sellers are recommended for price and quality?
