Is the motor (5.7 liter vortec) the same in 2wd & 4wd

Hi,  I have a 96 chev cheyenne & when I was having the oil changed the manager told me the engine (which I knew had either been replaced or rebuilt) was out of a 2wd because of the oil filter that gm's computer said it should use.   is there any way to check on that? thank you
