what year motors will drop right in a 97 z71  1500 vortec 5.8 and be compatiable with the
electronics ?

96+ 5.7 engines. Chevy didn't make a 5.8 so I assume you have the 5.7 (350). If you use an older one it won't have the vortec heads that you need to bolt the intake on. Old heads are drilled differently for the intake. Not to mention the vortec heads produce alot more power than an older one.
