What years 4180e will work in my 96 1ton

I have a 1996 4x4 1 ton chevy with a 454
and a 4l80e some people tell me I have to
get a transmission from the same year with
the same engine is this true ? Or can I take a
4l80e transmission from my buddies 98 3/4
ton with a 350

I think the bell housing should be the same I was more looking to find out if anything is differant electronically or things like that

The '98 trans will be almost the same as long as it is also 4x4 truck. Will need to swap cooler lines. 2wd has a longer tailshaft and will not mate with the T-case. FYI. 1.) The 4l80e was released in '91, replaced the 3 spd TH400. 91-93 interchangeable, 94's are alone and 96 and up to the new bellhousing (LS style engines in 99). 2.) Bellhousing's are the same from the 4.3 v-6 up to the big blocks. Including the 6.2 and 6.5 diesels. The 4L60e was changed electronically around 96 though.

The rule of the tum, is exactly tranny replacement, and reprogram basic data to compute, like "on ignition, (No starting )seconds later, starting engine finally drive at regular speed so computer admit updates.-
