No oil pressure at startup

Asked by James Mar 03, 2016 at 07:25 PM about the 1997 Buick Regal LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Oil pressure light remains on for up to 60 seconds
when starting the car.  Once light goes off it stays
off until shutting off.  Let the car sit for 2 minutes
and it will take from 3 to 8 seconds for oil pressure
light to turn off.

Has the oil ben changed? There must be a lot of miles on the motor also. Either verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, and try replacing the oil pressure sending unit. May be worn out.

The oil was changed 600 miles ago and 4200 miles ago. Both times using Valvoline max life. There is only 117,000 miles on the car.

It is indeed 10W30. There is ticking/clatter on the top side of the motor for a couple of minutes when first starting the car but goes away.

Well like I said, should verify the oil pressure, and try replacing the oil pressure sending unit. If the oil pressure is low, then there is wear in the crankshaft, and rod bearings.
