What would cause the battery to explode?

The battery went dead, was jumped and then blew a fuse on the headlights.
Another jump start and the car ran for 4 hours. When arrived home, went to
jump the battery, turned the key and it exploded.

A spark and gases escaping from the battery. Since you had multiple jump starts, it was time for a new battery. Read this for more info.
