What would cause the battery to explode?

Asked by boomdity Jul 31, 2017 at 09:12 PM about the 2005 Buick LeSabre Custom Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The battery went dead, was jumped and then blew a fuse on the headlights.
Another jump start and the car ran for 4 hours. When arrived home, went to
jump the battery, turned the key and it exploded.

Time for a new battery. Get the alternator tested also.

Basically Inside the battery is "water" and some metal plates. The water when the battery is first charged gets turned to battery acid due to chemical changes and ions and stuff. Now when water has, electricity passed through it it breaks down the molecules in it to the basic elements. Ie oxygen and hydrogen. Odds are that the battery was defective and leaked said hydrogen and when you turned the key a spark jumped somewhere igniting it. Kaboom
