my 2000 buick lasabre has a check engine light on and now the transmission has started to slip. could it be a vacumn leak that causes it to slip?

Not likely a vacuum leak. Your transmission is electronically controlled. You probably have a bad shift solenoid. GM transmissions are notorious for that. This can also trigger the check engine light. Visit your local auto parts store and let them scan the computer for trouble codes. Most stores will do it for free. HTH. -Jim
