Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My van is blowing upper radiator hoses and
I'm not sure what is wrong with it!

1 Answer

I'm assuming that the hoses keep blowing off the fittings? Not bursting? With that in mind it sounds like either weak (spring type) hose clamps or a faulty radiator cap. Weak hose clamps should be replaced with the screw type clamps. When the spring type get old they become weak. A few months ago my friend had the lower radiator hose blow off his 2000 Chevy Blazer. We changed the hose clamps to the screw type and it's been fine. If the radiator cap is bad and allows excessive pressure to build up, that can blow a radiator hose off too. Generally speaking the cap should blow off at 16 PSI maximum pressure. HTH. -Jim
