You would want to replace the cover and the gasket. The covers rust out. Just take it off and bring it into the parts store. Usually there are 3.73:1 in the rear end on these.

thank you for your response. it is my only vehicle, so need it to go get part. is the ring gear size 8.5 or 8.6? the parts store i called does not keep 10 bolt in stock, would need to order online (which i could do myself) ive looked on a website and the pictures of the 10 bolts dont look quit like mine. mine has the bubble for the gears on drivers side, appears to be completely round. the pixs of rounds they had did not have the bubble, but said was for the 8.5 or 8.6, which i believe i have (?). i want to do this myself, as i am capable, and not have to pay someone to do it for me. i just need to make sure i buy the right cover and get it done before something worse happens and the whole thing needs replaced.

Search on line for VIN number check, I believe it is in the Vin number. I'll look also in the mean time for a sight.

Is there a tag on one of the bolts? Looking around the vin number does not have the gear ratio in it.

The rpo codes will have your answer. Post all the ones that start with a "G" and I'll tell you. For an example gt4 is 3.73

Are you just trying to stop a leak or replace the rear end? Gear ratio won't matter. You either have a 10 bolt (8.5) or a 14 bolt (way less common). The 8.6 is just an updated version or the 8.5. The housing and cover will be the same. That fact will only matter if you are changing internal parts
