Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Engine malfunction light stays on.  Had car into dealer on two occasions.  First time, they checked and couldn't find anything.  Light went out.  Two days later, light came back on and I took it back to dealer.  $300.00 later, the gas cap was changed and the hose leading into the fuel tank was replaced (it was frayed, they said).  Light went out.  Two days later light came back on.  Every time dealer looks at problem, I am charged $85.00 per hour.  Obviously, they don't know what the problem is.  Two weeks before I brought car into dealer because of air conditioner not working and engine malfunction light was on.   I had to replace my air conditoner, cost $2000.00.  At this poine, my engine light is on again.  HELP!

These vehicles are prone to problems with the evaporative emissions system. They can be devilish to diagnose. The replacement of the cracked hoses and the fuel cap was a good start. You may also have a problem with your evap purge solenoid, your leak detection pump, or even the fuel tank -- I saw one extreme case where a fuel tank had buckled from vacuum pressure. The engine light would come on at a certain fuel level because the computer system thought there was a leak based on its readings. Good luck, and ask the dealership to FIX the problem, because they have already charged you a lot to try to solve it.

I work for Chrysler and the only way you can get this resolved would be to call the customer assistance line and make them get a District Manager or Zone Representative to come out and look at it. Sometimes Chrysler will even take care of the repair itself. The number is 1-800-992-1997.

My 2002 T&C engine light came on and within 1 week, the transmission failed. $2600.00 later, all is fine, KOW.

What exactly is the code, BTW? It could be that there is a larger problem or it could simply be that the dealership is misinterpreting the code and the fix.
