2007 Mini Cooper S with Automatic
Transmission.  The transmission will shift down
very hard - like it gives me a good jolt.  Now it
happens only when I drive the car cold, and by
cold I mean after not driving it for a day or more.
It won’t happen if I drive to the store, park for 3-5
hours, and then drive.  So, when it does happen,
it’s only for a brief time — like 2-3 minutes and
then it’s perfectly fine.  I thought maybe the
transmission fluid is old, dirty or low and maybe it
needs flushed and replaced but that is a guess
and a not well educated one. Any thoughts?

If you have over 50K miles, then yes, change the fluid. At the same time the mechanic can inspect and hook the vehicle to some diagnostic equipment to see if the shifting is caused by a faulty solenoid or sensor.
