Car won't start or park after towing

Asked by Snowden Apr 30, 2018 at 07:38 AM about the 2007 INFINITI G35 x Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So today I got a tow for about 35 min home. Started with tow truck driver
putting it in neutral so he could load it on his flatbed; he left it in neutral which
apparently this does not matter. After when I get dropped off, car does not
start and when pressing the start button with the brakes pressed, usually
starts the car. This time when I tried with the tow truck driver present, only
the electronics tuned on as if i wasn't pressing the brakes. Instead of the
usual P being displayed, 3 is always displayed when trying to start the
engine (note in order to get to 3, you have to move from P to D then shift
over to sport mode and from there go up + to actually even show a #. Car at
the same time is obviously not in park/can be pushed, also there seems to
be little to no resistance when switching between N and D which there
usually is. Another flatbed came and we tried to reset computer/disconnect
battery and he played around for a bit. I think tow truck driver might have
hooked up in the wrong place, no way could he screw up my
transmission/link right? Is this a shifter issue?

What was the original problem with the car that you had it towed?

I was stopped for speeding. Had the car off when waiting for tow, started up normally when loading...

There are four separate PNP (Park\Neutral Position) switches. One each for park, neutral, drive, and reverse. These switches are mounted in/on the transmission and on the AT connect to the TCM. It sounds like either one of the switches is not working properly or your TCM is bad. Most likely something you would want your dealer to check out. As far this being caused by the car not hooked up correctly when towing, I don't know. Modern vehicles work mostly through electronics and if another component was damaged, then it is possible that this is creating the problem.

Just had the same issue tried for a while. Make sure and check the starting wheel. It was locked. When we turned the wheel stared right up
