BMW x5 Rear Axle Drive Failure

Asked by khemy Oct 26, 2014 at 10:27 PM about the 2007 BMW X5 3.0si AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi , i am wondering if you can advise me. I have a e70 x5 3.0 Diesel. I upgraded rims
exactly 1 year ago to 20" staggered Vossen rims . Yesterday the Diff broke and i am
in the process of trying to source a new diff .

My mechanic is suggesting that the cause of the diff (rear axle drive)  failure is the
wider Rims and tyres that i had put on. I am not sure since i see the sport package
came with those same sized rims and tyress i used.

Do you agree that the wider rims and tyres caused the diff (rear axle drive)  to fail ?  I
am worried as i dont want the same to happen again.

I will admit that since i upgraded , i normally get the traction light blinking at time when
the road is slightly uneven when accelerating.

If you can advise me i will be very thakful.

Thanks
Khemy

I don't even want to know what the cost to repair this would be on a BMW. Did your mechanic give you a quote on repairs? Guessing you can afford this, since you saying that you don't want this to happen AGAIN. Best advice I can give you is to stick to OEM specs to avoid issues like this in the future. Wider rims and tires caused this mess.

What confuses me is the sport package comes with the staggered rims and tyres .

I am purchasing a new diff. Will the 08 diff work ? Do you think the problem will reoccur if I leave the existing rims and tires on if I use the 08 diff ?
