P0420 slow acceleration

Asked by Brandy931 Feb 15, 2017 at 10:18 AM about the 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5 S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Code p0420 came and cleared but problem
remains that car will not accelerate when u
floor it, engine will not increase rpms, will
accelerate if u drive like grandma, was told
could be clogged converter or o2 sensor...
Does that sound right? Is either an
expensive fix? I'm very pregnant and can't
climb in/under to navigate myself, will have
to go to shop, but I don't want to get taken
advantage of.

It sure sounds like a plugged catalytic converter, that could have set off the code. Just have it checked out at an exhaust shop.

Yup, plugged catalytic converter. Just had the exact thing on a 2002 VW beetle. Replaced cad and code cleared on it's own

This is what worked for me. I Don't understand any of the terminology, but if you give this to your technician they'll be able to figure it out.

I checked the plugs and found that #1and4 plugs were burning poor. I cleaned them and put them back. Power improve but lasted few weeks. Repeat the process and switched the coil on plug, got more power. Now watching before I change coil on plug

Here's what my mechanic sent me. They fixed it and I haven't had an issue with it since.
