R350 strange suspension issue

Asked by Ashwin Jul 17, 2018 at 05:02 AM about the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class R 350 4MATIC

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all, i have a 2007 R350 4Matic.

I have a strange issue going on so please excuse the length of this post.

When I drive the car for say an hour or so I get the riser malfunction i.e. the car icon with up
arrow and malfunction text. This weekend I drove to Vegas and not only did the former
happen but also the "STOP, car too low came on". Stopped for a while, the car rose again
and same repeated. When I parked the car overnight same issue the back wheels were
completely depressed. On the way back same issue over and over. Had to stop 3-4 times for
it to rise. I did notice the left rear was more depressed than right rear. Please note all
throughout the outside air temperature was like 105-112F.

Now, when i came home, started the car this morning, it did not even complain the car is too
low even after a full night stop.

Is it possible that the left rear air-bag is malfunctioning after 1hr of driving or after driving in
extreme conditions? If the pump was faulty the car would never rise correct?

Any ideas here would be very, very helpful.

Also, is it OK to change only one airbag or recommend both?

I've had bad experience with my R class rear air suspension system, replace left side after few months right side became problem, so i decided to bought the ML Class spring assembly to replace the air bag system in my 2006 model R Class, remove the compressor fuse and it working perfectly. Now my entire headache are gone!

Do the ML rear strut assemblies fit directly or is modification required? Thanks.

Guru65L41 you need these parts; 164-321-02-04 (x2) or 36166640(bilstein part #) 164-320-00-56 (x2) 164-325-02-15 (x2) 211-328-00-58 (x2) - I would get a few more for piece of mind if one brakes. Direct fitment. The R-class was sold without rear air in europe, US market was standard rear air. You do not have to replace the rear struts. I have the ADS system and I'm not 100% sure if I can keep the ADS.
