1998 Town & country

Asked by mickeyswing52 Sep 29, 2011 at 04:41 PM about the 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXi LWB FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 3.8 L automatic .If I check the battery voltage it reads 12.44 volts. With the engine running it shows 14.25 volts. With all electrical turned on ,heater, lights, power heated seats ect. it shows 13.87. All seams ok. If I start the van and drive about 8 -10 blocks the battery charge light comes on.With the battery charge light on with a meter it shows 11.8 volts.  If i turn the van off and restart the light is off for a while but will come back on. Do you think the alternator is bad or maybe the PCM.  Battery test ok and the terminals are clean. Any thing Else I should check.  Thanks Lynn

I'm having 2 different problems. The first was that the engine would be turned off and the electronic door locks would randomly lock until the battery dies. The second is the same issues you are having . It started out with the battery light coming on. Then down the road a ways all electrical systems went haywire and the gear would kick down into 2nd. We are thinking its a computer problem but we aren't exactly sure.

Bingo. Regulator is bad -- integral to the alternator. Easy wasn't it?
