I would never have dealer look at it or do it. Take it to a mechanic you can trust and get inspection and estimate for both your ideas.

It's the head that needs resurfaced not the cylinders. I would do the head job vs another engine unless it's been abused. 140k it's not bad for normal use and proper maintenance.

Subaru's never have head gaskets issues? So, I'm told.. kinda strange.. Even thought they are famous for this issue!. Its always more cost effective to change out the engine! simple. Buy a lower mileage engine, you will save time, money, and headaches, Its even difficult to locate decent repair facility, and or a machine shop that's competent in 2016 Check online everyone knows to replace not rebuild in this case.

what A_C? they DO have HG issues... but not every problem that comes across a forum IS a HG issue. Mileage these days generally means zilch.. it's more about maintenance/care.. LV, if you absolutely TRUST the dealer, maybe. But as Mik said, find someone with real integrity and maybe that's familiar with sub's and the head torque procedure. Are you having issues with the car? hot lava bubbling coolant from the res? weeping oil/coolant from the head gaskets? what were their reasons / were you in for an oil change or something? I recently bought a halfway rebuilt EJ253 ($450) but only because the heads were decked and new HG's and supposedly torqued correctly (I'd estimate at least $500 work). I'm going to clean it up more and do as many other gaskets as I can before I swap it out. But I would not buy just any used engine straight out of another car to try to avoid what will happen again. Walth nailed it! 2000+ SOHC non-turbo head gasket replacements are common and quite durable if done carefully, which includes machine shop work (as mentioned), and care in torquing new bolts. Expect to pay $1300-1700 for a high quality job all in.

Oops! Firstly, are you SURE you NEED new HGs? Subie dealers almost ALWAYS tell owners of 2000+ SOHC motors that they need HGs. If your coolant loss is minimal, and your never overheating, and you're not bleeding much oil out the passenger side head just use 10W40 oil and watch coolant levels and see how the summer goes.
