Blazer Starting Problems..... haven't seen this answer yet....

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My mom's 94 Blazer has to be started every few days to make sure battery
doesn't die.... (she doesn't drive often).  Sometimes when starting, it cranks
without turning over a few times, then you get the "click" of a dead battery
sound.  Then an hour later, try to start it and it starts right up!  Similar to
other questions, but if it drains the battery the first time trying, how can it
start right up an hour later?  Have checked battery, starter and alternator....
all good.  COULD be battery even though it checked out ok.  (Dead cell
maybe?).  Starter is fairly new and checks out ok.  I wanted to gather some
info to try for next time I go over to help her....  any suggestions?

Starting it every few days and running it for a few minutes will not replace all the charge in the battery that was removed in starting it. I would recommend a battery tender to keep the battery charge topped off. Go a "google" search for battery tender or battery maintainer and there are lots of options.

Uh oh. Well, duh - a trickle charger or battery tender sounds great, BUT my mom lives at an apartment complex and has to park her car in a parking lot with no access to an electrical outlet to plug the thing in. :( So much for that idea :(

Not to worry - in the meantime, I've discovered that Harbor Freight (and Amazon) have a "Thunderbolt" solar powered one that has good reviews.... will have to give it a try..... HF has it for about $15.00. Thank you for responding!

Not real sure why I didn't think of that. Hope it works!
