Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Subaru Forester (NOT TURBO). It has thrown a P0456 code,
small evap leak. I had it diagnosed quickly, smoke test showed smoke
“blubbering from top of gas tank” viewed by mirror from underneath. Back
seat was not removed. They want to remove gas tank and smoke but suspect
it is from the top of tank and they have ruled out the canister. I can remove
the tank myself but would like to prepare properly beforehand. What can I
expect to need to replace up there once I get it out so I can have it on hand
when it is removed? Thank you.

Have a new gas pump seal (to the tank) ready.

Thank you Sir, but there are a lot of vents and hoses and doodangs up on that tank, I would have imagined a few more items to put on my list along with the gas pump seal. I want to avoid getting all the way into this project and not having the parts on hand to get it done. (I have to pay for stall time in an auto skills shop on my military base.) Thank you.

Buy everything possible then. Hopefully you can return the unneeded parts.

Thanks, that is part of the research trouble I am having. I am trying to find out if there are any kits that would include all those evap hoses and little connectors and I can’t seem to find any. This looks like one of those jobs that only get done by dealers or subaru specialists. They have access to the hard to find little parts that I can see getting stuck having to search for once I get deep into this project. I am looking for someone who might be on this forum that has done this before and might have identified parts in this area above the tank that are typically in bad shape around 100K mileage and can help me identify best sources for replacements. Sorry to bother.

You should be able to successfully reattach everything you remove...except maybe those "doodangs" you refer to. Have fun.
