It would still pump right pressure even if back words,if it is new you may need a pressure regulator.

If you could blow through it is ok,im leaning toward fuel pressure regulator being bad.

is there a way to bypass the regulator to get it running I'm 15 miles from any part store and my truck blew a head gasket they other day I hope that's all it is I put water in radiator and it ends up in oil pan I don't even half to start it
