Saturn SL2 2002, High running RPM

Asked by Feb 09, 2017 at 02:13 AM about the 2002 Saturn S-Series 4 Dr SL2 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my car idles around 800-900 rpm's, but when I drive at 45 mph i'm at 2000
rpm 55 mph is 2500. i also have a 03' ION and at 45 with 1500 and at 60 mph
i run about 2100.
Is this normal for an 02 SL2 to run at these RPM's?

could this be because of a lack of maintenance by the previous owner not giving it an oil change every 3k miles?

It all depends on the gearing, two different rigs even though they are the same make will have different ratios in the gearing of the trans and the final drive. This sounds perfectiall normal too me. Idle speed looks good and the rpm range looks fine at speeds listed. It looks like the SL2 is geared slightly lower possibly for more city type driving where quicker throttle response would help in traffic. You still might be able to find gearing ratios on the Internet and then compaired the two.

thank you very much!

how do you read the ration, as in the first gear is 2.526 : 1 fyi this is my first car and i'm really just trying to learn something without taking it ti the shop

So it takes the engine 2.526 revolutions to make one revolution out the tailshaft of the transmission.
