2002 saturn 3 door coupe manual transmission

i have a problem when i put my foot on the clutch the rpm drop under 1000 they will flucuate up and down and then die in the middle of me driving.  It has also done it to me as i come to a stop sign or traffic signal.  it has recently started this do you have any idea's..
