Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am working on a 2001 Saturn SL1 which just won't start.  I keep hearing a
click sound when I try the key but then nothing.  All lights come up on the dash.
I change out the starter thinking that was it but same issue with click sound.
Not sure where to go from here.

batteries are the worst, they can show good power but if the cranking amps are bad it will not crank. batteries are only good for 3 years, when warranty is up? most likely your battery is to...

Looks like it is the battery. I tested it and keep getting errors then charged it w/10amp charge for a few hours but still getting errors. I just wished I would have started with the battery first then may have saved some $$ on the starter. Oh well . . . Thanks!!

hey man now you know your stater is good and keep the old one for a back up. turn a negative to a positive man!

Okay, NEW battery but same problem with the one click and now a weird ringing sound like a bad door bell and now I see some smoke coming up behind the engine towards the top. I am thinking it is probably coming from some wires according to the smell. I guessing it is the starter relay? I am really fishing here; sadly :(

sounds like your going to have to take out starter, bench test it before buying a new one and also check the wire, i have had wires go bad because the connections are just copper on the power wire and they do corrode and go bad. sorry its just tuf trying to find you problem out being blind here. but do check the connections and the starter. that will cost you nothing.
