This is an easy one, if you haven't ever gotten an answer. The shift cable linkage is held in place and tight by a metal clip - one cable for 1-3-5 and 1 cable for 2-4-R. When the clip gets rusted it eventually snaps and that cable is no longer held tightly in place so when you try to shift into the corresponding gears, the linkage isn't actually moving the gear selector. I found 2 super easily in a junkyard and that worked fine. I also was able to locate a brand new OEM part which cost less than $5. The repair takes all of 3 minutes, 5 if you have difficulty maneuvering to the cable linkage. You'll be looking directly in front of the driver in the engine bay, and down maybe a foot.
